IPConfigure Orchid VMS, Three Tiers, One Architecture
JB Technologies designs and installs the full IPConfigure Orchid Video Management Software lineup across Georgia. Orchid is a Linux-native VMS family with three deployment tiers: Orchid Core for single-server camera plants up to 24 cameras per server, Orchid Fusion for multi-server federation with role-based access, and Orchid Hybrid for on-premises recording with cloud archival. All three tiers share the same camera commissioning model, the same ONVIF-flexible camera support and the same browser-based client, which means a customer can start on Core, add Fusion when they reach multi-site scale, and layer Hybrid on top when they want cloud archive without changing camera firmware or operator workflow.
Orchid Core VMS, the Foundation
Orchid Core is the entry point. It runs natively on Ubuntu LTS, RHEL or CentOS server, supports up to 24 cameras per server instance, and uses standard ONVIF Profile S and Profile T for camera discovery. There is a free open-source tier that is often the right call for pilot deployments, edge sites, back-of-house cameras at a small storefront or a single school's camera plant before district-wide rollout. Core supports H.264 and H.265, streams direct from camera to client in most workflows so the server is not decoding every frame, and exposes a clean browser UI for live view, search and clip export. JB Technologies sizes Core servers based on camera count, target frame rate, resolution mix and retention window, and we typically deploy on commodity Linux hardware that customers already maintain.
Orchid Fusion VMS, the Federation Layer
Fusion is what changes the conversation for multi-site customers. It sits above one or many Orchid Core servers and presents a unified search, live view and user management experience across the entire camera plant. There is no per-camera license cap on Fusion, which means a school district, a multi-store retailer or a logistics operator can federate 50, 200 or 1,000-plus cameras under a single management pane without renegotiating their license every time they add a building. Fusion's role-based access control is granular: the security director sees every camera, a campus principal sees only their building, a store manager sees only their store, and a vendor sees only the corridor they need for a defined service window. Fusion integrates with customer identity providers for SSO, which matters to IT-mature customers who do not want a separate password silo for cameras.
Orchid Hybrid VMS, On-Prem Plus Cloud Archive
Hybrid is the answer for customers who want most of their footage local but need a small cloud safety net. The on-prem recorder behaves identically to Orchid Core. The cloud component, Orchid Cloud, holds a shadow copy of selected clips and provides remote review without a VPN into the customer network. For sites with thin internet pipes, Hybrid is the right balance: it keeps high-resolution recording local where bandwidth is cheap and only ships flagged clips upstream. For multi-tenant medical office buildings, for example, Hybrid lets the property manager review evidence remotely without exposing the full camera plant to the public internet.
ONVIF, the Real Reason Customers Choose Orchid
Many cloud-only VMS platforms require customers to buy the VMS vendor's own cameras. Orchid does the opposite. It is built on ONVIF Profile S and Profile T, which means it commissions cleanly against Axis, Hanwha, Bosch, Hikvision, Dahua, Vivotek and most other ONVIF-compliant camera lines. This matters for two reasons. First, customers who have inherited mixed-vendor camera plants through acquisition or piecemeal expansion can consolidate onto a single VMS without ripping out functional cameras. Second, customers with strong vendor preferences can pair Orchid with whatever camera line their security team already trusts.
JBT Capabilities for Orchid Deployments
Our Orchid work covers the full lifecycle. We start with a site walk, where we map camera coverage against the floor plan, confirm the cabling path and identify the right tier (Core, Fusion or Hybrid) for the customer's scale. We handle low-voltage cabling, PoE switch design, server build, OS hardening, Orchid software install and licensing, camera commissioning, ONVIF integration testing, user role configuration, retention policy tuning per camera and operator training. After go-live, we support the system with documented runbooks, firmware updates, retention audits and on-call response. Customers who already run Orchid and need a knowledgeable integrator to take over support are welcome to bring us in on a transition basis.
Storage, Bandwidth and Retention Tuning
Storage and bandwidth choices drive the long-term operating cost of any VMS. Orchid lets us tune retention per camera, not per server, which is a meaningful difference at scale. A loading-dock camera that needs 30 days of retention at 4K does not need to be on the same retention policy as a back-of-house camera that needs 7 days at 1080p. We map retention against the actual security requirements of each camera area and size the server storage accordingly. On the bandwidth side, Orchid streams direct from the camera to the client in most workflows, which means the server is not decoding every frame and the network does not double-hop video on every live view. For customers with thin internet pipes or remote sites, that direct-stream model is a real advantage.
When Orchid is the Right Call
Orchid is the right call when the customer values predictable per-server licensing over per-channel cloud billing, when they want a Linux-native VMS that fits inside an existing IT footprint, when they need vendor-flexible ONVIF camera support, and when they have privacy or uptime requirements that argue for on-premises recording. Healthcare, education and IT-mature corporate customers in the Atlanta metro and across Georgia are common fits.
